Matthew Antal was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He attended Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts where he began playing viola at age 13 because he was told “you look like a violinist”. An all-around lover of music, he has played numerous instruments for ensembles in genres ranging from smooth jazz to hardcore metal. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto where he studied with Katharine Rapoport and a Master’s degree from the University of Victoria where he studied with Joanna Hood.
He is a regular performer with several early music ensembles around Toronto including Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Scaramella, Windemere String Quartet, Musicians in Ordinary, I Furiosi, Elixir Ensemble, and Talisker Players. Matthew is currently working on a DMA in Early Music at University of Toronto under the tutelage of Patrick Jordan and Stefano Marcocchi.
